A Tribute
A History
PURPOSE
The purpose of Basquaerie.com is to present an overview of the innumerable and remarkable accomplishments made by Mary Crane to the Great Pyrenees breed worldwide.

Mary Crane founded the Great Pyrenees breed in America in 1931, and together with her husband Francis began Basquaerie Great Pyrenees at their Needham, Massachusetts home. Her devotion and dedication to Great Pyrenees continued for more than fifty years.

This site should be informative to the new owner of a Great Pyrenees as well as to today's established breeders and exhibitors to whom Basquaerie is but a distant memory of a time in the breed long passed.

Mary Crane was the founder of the breed in America: a breeder, an exhibitor, a founder and long term officer of the Great Pyrenees Club Of America. Also Mary was an author, a Great Pyrenees history preservationist, and a well traveled dog show judge among her many accomplishments over fifty years.

The Basquaerie history presented herein is a brief overview, a synopsis, of the many accomplishments of Mary Crane to the Great Pyrenees breed.

GREAT PYRENEES TODAY
The Great Pyrenees you enjoy in your home today in all likelihood traces back to a Great Pyrenees imported by, bred by, purchased by or inspired by Mary Crane during her illustrious career with Great Pyrenees.

The next time you enter your Great Pyrenees in a dog show, prepare to finish a new Champion, or carefully plan that special litter, take just a moment to reflect back to the earliest era of the breed in the USA.

For just a moment think of the first Great Pyrenees ever exhibited at an American Kennel Club dog show, the first Great Pyrenees awarded an American Kennel Club Championship, and the first litter of Great Pyrenees born in the USA.

And when you take that reflective moment - Welcome to Basquaerie.com!

BASQUAERIE
“Basquaerie, a composite word, was chosen as a registered name because in its make-up it depicted through the word, Basque, the area of France in which the dogs were found, and by the addition of “aerie,” the high home of the eagle, the High Basque country as opposed to the Low Basque” - Mary W. Crane

Judge Mary W. Crane awards a Working Group First to record setting Ch. Karolaska Glacier, handled by Mr. C. Seaver Smith and owned by Edith K. Smith, Quibbletown Reg. This show was more than forty years after Basquaerie founded the breed in America.

Glacier's illustrious ancestry included the finest bloodlines and dogs imported by Basquaerie from France some forty years prior, including de Soum, d'Argeles, and du Val D'Aure.

As the generations continued following the Basquaerie importations, the finest kennels in America including Cote de Neige, Combermere, La Colina, and, Quibbletown, included those great early lines in their outstanding breeding programs.
