Schmidt: THE DOBERMAN PINSCHER, 1926, 1st edition.

Schmidt , a German and American breed authority, wrote several books or editions about his beloved Doberman Pinscher. This was both his first Doberman book, and the first complete book in English about the Doberman Pinscher. The Doberman Pinscher was still a rarity in America when Schmidt authored this 62 page book with illustrations.

On the front fancy end paper is affixed the personal library bookplate of R. F. Newman, a friend of Schmidt who lived on highly fashionable North Lake Drive.

The book’s title page bears the handwritten inscription, “ With compliments William Sidney Schmidt” .

Bound between pages 20 and 21, is the "Change In Standard" insert. The German breed standard had been changed about the same time the Schmidt book was printed. To reflect the Standard change and be as current as possible, this insert was bound into the book.

Both the back free endpaper and the back inside cover have Mr. Newman’s bookcase location stamp, showing at different times where the book was housed in Mr. Newman’s large private library.

This first edition is in nice overall condition and tight. This is an interesting copy for the serious breed collector. SOLD

Schmidt & Freitag: YOUR DOG'S OBEDIENCE TRAINING, 1941, 1st edition.

A very clean and tight copy, and an interesting little book.

This is a nice basic obedience training book. The subtitle is: "A Complete Instruction Course For Training Your Own dog".

Their writing style blends Obedience rules and regulations with an easy, informal style, using a dog named Carlo as the trainee.

There are several illustrations of a Doberman doing the exercises while the accompanying text talks about Carlo. In fairness, there are a few illustrations of a GSD doing the exercises while the accompanying text talks about Carlo.

Is Carlo the Doberman, or is the GSD Carlo? Or is Carlo just a name Schmidt and Freitag used to tell the obedience story?

The Doberman collector might well enjoy this book due to Schmidt's authorship, his role as a dog trainer, and his use of several Doberman photographs to illustrate his Obedience book.

This book has soft board covers, is very clean and tight, 4" x 6", and 100 pages. $45.00
